About Biduret®

Rating of sales:

Biduret® is manufactured by GSK. The active ingredients of Biduret® tablets are Hydrochlorothiazide and Amiloride. Hydrochlorothiazide is a potent thiazide diuretic, and Amiloride is a much milder potassium-sparing diuretic.

- high blood pressure (hypertension);

- heart failure;

- fluid retention caused by cirrhosis (liver disease).

Biduret® also can be used as an alternative oral agent for management of nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (do not confuse with diabetes mellitus or sugar diabetes), followed by abnormal production of urine (polyuria) and constant thirst (polydipsia).

MOA (mechanism of action):

Hydrochlorothiazide reduces the volume of blood circulating in the body through increased urine formation. Namely, it inhibits the sodium and water reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule (kidney nephron), so the unnecessary liquid leaves the body as urine instead of getting to the bloodstream. Hydrochlorothiazide also thought to relax the muscles in the walls of blood vessels, thereby lowering peripheral vascular resistance. Hydrochlorothiazide used alone can cause lots of potassium to be excreted out of the blood leading to hypokalemia.

Amiloride inhibits sodium reabsorption in the tubules and kidneys collecting ducts binding to responsive sodium channels. By these actions, Amiloride increases the excretion of water from the body through urination leading to reduction of plasma and extracellular fluid in volume. The reduced volume of plasma and extracellular liquid decreases the peripheral resistance, which leads to lower blood pressure. Amiloride is a potassium-conserving (antikaliuretic) drug used in combination with Hydrochlorothiazide to prevent the amount of potassium in the blood from falling too low.
